Mother's Day Gift Guide That Doesn't Spoil Mother Nature From The Rainforest Alliance

Mother’s Day is the one day of the year when spoiling your mum is a must. It’s your chance to say thank you for everything she’s done for you over the years. With just over a week to go, here’s how to spoil your mum this Mother’s Day without spoiling Mother Nature the Rainforest Alliance way…

Breakfast in bed…After a well-deserved lie-in, take your mum breakfast in bed. Make sure the coffee, tea and juice has come from a Rainforest Alliance CertifiedTM farm. The little green frog on the packaging - such as on Kenco coffee, PG tips or an Innocent Smoothie – is your assurance that it was grown using methods that protect forests, soils and waterways on farms that provide decent wages, housing, education and health care to workers and their families.

Send a card…Make sure your Mother’s Day card is made out of FSC certified paper. Through certification and verification, the Rainforest Alliance provides forest managers, farmers and tourism entrepreneurs with the tools to manage their land responsibly — preventing deforestation and forest degradation, increasing forest cover and conservation areas, and helping them generate the goods and services upon which we all rely.

Make her put her feet up…With a good book and a bar of chocolate. Sit your mum down with the latest best seller printed on FSC certified paper, and let her indulge in her favourite sweet treat. Farmed on over 18 million acres of tropical land, some 40 million people depend on cocoa for their livelihoods. Make sure the chocolate you buy contains cocoa grown with respect for people, wildlife and the environment. Check out our list of retailers offering certified chocolate and other goodies.

Make the Sunday lunch…Save carbon emissions and money by making a special Sunday lunch at home. When selecting the perfect bottle of wine to complement your meal, choose one that has a cork stopper, particularly if it’s certified by the Rainforest Alliance to meet the environmental and social standards of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Mediterranean cork forests provide refuge for the Iberian lynx and other endangered species and support local farmers who sustainably harvest the cork bark without damaging the trees, leaving them standing for future generations.

Take her for afternoon tea…Us Brits love our tea; in fact in the UK we drink over 165 million cups of tea a day. Did you know that 100 million of these cups come from tea gardens and estates that have achieved Rainforest Alliance certification? That’s 60 per cent of all the tea consumed in the UK. So make sure your mum’s favourite cuppa has a little green frog on it.

Do something different…For those that want to do away with the traditional gifts why not get your mum…a rainforest! Donate to Adopt-A-Rainforest through www.rainforest-alliance.org/aar to support conservation programs run by the Rainforest Alliance’s partner organisations in Latin America and give your mum a little slice of Mother Nature!
